Grades
The Department values compentency based
education. What this means to you as a student is that we have established
skills levels in each of our classes that we work to bring you to. This
dosen't always lend itself well to evaluation by grade as it tends to
produce a majority of grades in the "A" and "B"
range. Thus the historical criticism that the Department contributes
to grade inflation at the University.
In an effort to deal with this the OT faculty established
the B+ as the grade that a student should expect in a Departmental class
if all expectations are met. The intent of the "A" has always
been to represent "superior" or "exceptional" work.
You can earn an "A" in my courses. To do so, you need to demonstrate
"exceptional" or "superior" knowledge and application
of the course content. You also need to demonstrate professional behavior
in consistent attendance, preparation and participation in the class.
Expectations
I see what goes on in the classroom as somewhat resembling
dancing with a partner. Dancing is an activity where both parties (hopefully!)
work together towards some mutual goal. My goal will be to help you
acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to become a successful therapist.
Here is what you can expect from me:
I do not see myself as a teacher...someone who simply puts information
out and expects you to soak it up. Expect me to be willing to do just
about anything to present information in a manner that helps you learn
it. You also have the right to expect me to be on time and prepared
for the class. I will notify you by email or voicemail if I need to
cancel a class...just as soon as I realize that this must be done. You
have a right to expect me to be approachable, whether that be in person,
by phone or email. I will attempt to run the class at a rate where you
can best learn and to organize material in a manner that builds logically,
one point to the next.
I enjoy teaching by metaphor and story. I will try not to waste your
time by telling you tales that have nothing to do with the material
to be learned. I will also endeavor to tell these tales in a manner
which is not offensive for you.
Here is what I will expect from you:
I expect you to attend class and be prepared to discuss readings when
they are assigned. If you cannot attend class you need to contact me
via email or telephone. This is your part of the dance. If you do not
understand a point or item you need to let me know. Ask questions in
class, catch me outside of class if it is uncomfortable to ask in front
of your peers. The main point is ask! Working together, we will find
a way that will clarify the material for you.
If I don't know you are hurting I cannot help you. Don't wait till a
test to demonstrate that something didn't make sense, it's too late
at that point...the grade stands.
If a story or metaphor offends you, let me know. I understand that this
is difficult and that you may fear retaliation. First point, there will
be no retaliation. We will sit down and discuss the issue. If you can
help me see your logic you will likely prevail in your request! This
too is preparation for professional life. Secondly, I would ask that
you do not complain to some other faculty member without speaking to
me first. If you have spoken to me and I still conduct myself in a manner
which offends you than you have a right to speak to other OT faculty
or UNE administrators.
